Art Quilt – Blue Elephant

Art Quilt – Blue Elephant

I love the Indian Elephant wall-hangings, so decided to try one out for myself. The elephant is appliquéd to the blue background. I used Indian embroidery pieces to decorate the border. Kantha stitches were used to spice up the blue background. The elephant material was cut from a dress, mirror-work was added, along with embroidery stitching, and bits of ribbon. My aim was to make the whole piece colourful. This wall-hanging is smaller than my usual works, 53cm x 55cm. I'm looking forward to trying out another elephant quilt along the same lines,…continue reading →
Vintage Shabby Chic Art Quilt

Vintage Shabby Chic Art Quilt

This quilt was made from an old patchwork hippy dress I had stored away. I had found it in a charity shop many years ago, it was great for this latest project. Well, the dress became the inspiration for the quilt! The vintage materials went well with the old Indian embroidery pieces. The border is also made from an old hippy shoulder bag. On each panel I sewed on a bird, decorating each panel with some mirror-work and the birds each needed a perch, which was supplied using more of the Indian embroidery…continue reading →
Art Quilt – Birds

Art Quilt – Birds

This is the second quilt I made over the winter months, most of it sewn by hand. My sewing machines are all kept in my small sewing-room/box-room, and really its just far too cold at the moment to sit through there, so here I am hand-sewing because its warmer through here! Again this design was inspired by the designs in the new book I bought, ‘Stitched Textiles: Birds’, by Rachel Sumner. In this one I applied my own design, using appliqué techniques, and various hand-stitching. I had been attracted to the book by…continue reading →
Art Quilt – Bird Song

Art Quilt – Bird Song

Over the winter months, I worked away at various crafts, I knitted blanket squares, finally making two small woolly blankets for my cats, which they seemed to appreciate, but who can tell with cats! Then I started on a rag-quilt, my first, which I decided to do totally by hand, enjoyable to start with, before becoming arduous, and how messy! I didn’t realise just how messy it can become, loose threads everywhere! Although I did enjoy it, what I finished up with, isn’t even large enough for a cushion cover. It's currently hung…continue reading →
St Monans Arts Festival 2018

St Monans Arts Festival 2018

This was my first year in St Monans, and the first time I've taken part in St Monans Community Arts Festival. There were many activities and workshops held throughout the weekend. A very enjoyable event for adults and children alike! The arts festival was set up in 2009 by a group of local people, the festival was built around the talented people living in or with strong connections to the village of St Monans, and has been a great success ever since. https://stmonans.org.uk/blog/category/community/st-monans-arts-festival-community/continue reading →
Art Quilt – Golden Elephant

Art Quilt – Golden Elephant

Really enjoyed making this quilt. I loved the image of the golden elephant and it went well with some old cushion covers I had stashed away in my fabric bags. I cut up an old scarf and appliqued some of the glimmering attachments. The embroidery in the panels is superb and I lay no claim to them whatsoever, this work is done in India by very skilled seamsters, the skills being passed down from generation to generation. As far as I know, the materials are gathered from discarded sari's, etc, and re-worked into…continue reading →
Art Quilt – Peacock

Art Quilt – Peacock

The Peacock with its shimmering colours, blues, reds, some wonderful embroidery from India taken from cushion covers, an old boho skirt, a multi-coloured top I wore until it became too shabby... the finished quilt hung with bamboo rod. Much hand-sewing after two sewing-machine needles broke after a collision with beaded sequins...continue reading →

Art Quilt – Spring

Art Quilt – Spring

It took me ages to complete this art quilt, it has lain there all winter just waiting for those final finishing touches. Finally over a fresh Spring weekend, I finally found the inspiration to complete the project. It reminds me of Spring moving into Summer when again the life-force bursts forward with much noise and bright light full of colour and song. A very welcome time of the year in a cold and often grey, cloudy Scotland where the winters are long and the weather is inclined to storm-filled skies. As I type,…continue reading →
BBC River City

BBC River City

BBC River City My favourite mosaic commission to date was a commission to create a set of 6 mosaics featuring ships for the BBC Scotland soap drama River City. I first had to create one as a sample before getting the go-ahead. Once this was done and accepted, I had a very tight deadline to producing the other 6. I can honestly say that I think I worked round the clock on them, cut myself several times, and so very glad when finally they were finished! I was invited to view the set…continue reading →
