Vintage Shabby Chic Art Quilt

Vintage Shabby Chic Art Quilt

This quilt was made from an old patchwork hippy dress I had stored away. I had found it in a charity shop many years ago, it was great for this latest project. Well, the dress became the inspiration for the quilt! The vintage materials went well with the old Indian embroidery pieces. The border is also made from an old hippy shoulder bag. On each panel I sewed on a bird, decorating each panel with some mirror-work and the birds each needed a perch, which was supplied using more of the Indian embroidery…continue reading →

Art Quilt – Birds

This is the second quilt I made over the winter months, most of it sewn by hand. My sewing machines are all kept in my small sewing-room/box-room, and really its just far too cold at the moment to sit through there, so here I am hand-sewing because its warmer through here! Again this design was inspired by the designs in the new book I bought, ‘Stitched Textiles: Birds’, by Rachel Sumner. In this one I applied my own design, using appliqué techniques, and various hand-stitching. I had been attracted to the book by…continue reading →

Girl in Blue Dress & Thai Print The Girl in the Blue Dress is an old painting and was laid away, collecting dust for many years, I recently came across her again and decided to spruce her up a bit. She is an image I have painted several times, there is something about her that I like to try to capture. She has become to me the Girl in the Blue Dress. Her portrait I keep in a folder and by now she must be all grown up with perhaps family of her…continue reading →

Art Quilt – African

African Art Quilt This is another older piece of artwork rescued and turned into an art quilt. The image is based totally on an artwork I admired, (original by Tony Hudson). This one was first done during an experiment with fabric crayons, but they really didn't give me the strength of colour I wanted, so it was abandoned and laid away (for a rainy day)...or in this case, a particularly dry spell when my painting isn't flowing! So I went over the painting with acrylics to strengthen the colours, then just enjoyed finding…continue reading →
Girl with Cat

Girl with Cat

This art quilt is based on a painting by Franz Marc. The painting was done a few years back, and I had decorated the borders with fabric intending to insert it into a frame. It was left lying in storage and recently finding it again, I decided to give it a revamp and turn it into an art quilt, breathing new life into it. This is the third time I have painted 'Girl with Cat,' there's something in it that attracts me back to it time and again, I'm sure I will paint…continue reading →

More Art Quilts

This quilt uses pieces of embroidery I did years ago, which then lay idle in a folder I hadn't opened for years. Its fun to look out for colourful scraps of fabric from charity shops and carboot sales. The central motif for this quilt was found in a charity shop. I was also lucky in picking up a book of fabric 'sample' squares from a fabric shop. I don't have the skills or patience to do traditional or complicated quilts, so these small art quilts are fun to do and for now have…continue reading →

Art Quilts

Art Quilts I took a fancy to making a small 'art quilt', and spent a week raking through a huge bag of scrap materials I keep. I hate sewing and therefore admire all those folk who love to sew and the skills they have to make clothes, quilts, etc. This one took me a week and is only my second quilt, the first one I made was way back pre-2005, so its took me a while to get around to making another! The Tree Frog (below) is a painting I did, but the…continue reading →
