St Andrews by the Harbour

St Andrews by the Harbour

Whilst researching for this painting, it was interesting to find several photos depicting the scene over the decades. At one point Victorian terrace houses had sat side-by-side with the cottage, the cottage itself looks like it was a harbour or merchant house complete with stables. At some point the terraced houses were demolished, I'm sure this was a mistake at the time, it was fashionable to demolish these well-built terraced houses and replace then with dubious, but fashionable concrete blocks, a mistake made throughout the UK. East Neuk of Fife – Series of Colourist Paintings

A Series of Colourist Paintings of the East Neuk of Fife. The East Neuk of Fife is a lovely area made up of small fishing villages and towns. Fishing villages have a lovely collection of ‘folksy’, old, higgledy-piggledy cottages, many painted in bright, cheerful colours. Old rowing-boats, flowerpots, barrels, all filled with flowering plants add to the overall colour. An absolute delight on warm, summer days! Crail Harbour is very impressive and the stone-work is fantastic. Ideal for a colourist painting, each stone having it's own shape, size and colour. It is still…continue reading →

St. Monans – Series of Colourist Paintings

A Series of Colourist Paintings of St. Monans. Currently I'm enjoying working with bright colours in a Colourist style. I'm planning on doing a series of these paintings inspired by the village of St. Monans, and the East Neuk. Fishing villages have a lovely collection of 'folksy', old, higgledy-piggedy cottages, many painted in bright, cheerful colours. Old rowing-boats, flowerpots, barrels, all filled with flowering plants add to the overall colour. An absolute delight on warm, summer days! The Auld Kirk is one of my favourite buildings in St. Monans. The Auld Kirk https://crystalgalleries.org.uk/2021/03/east-neuk-of-fife-series-of-colourist-paintings/continue reading →

After a preliminary drawing, I then carried out the painting in acrylics. The Auld Kirk sits in St. Monans and the ancient site can be dated back to approx. 1265, although previous to this, it was believed that the site had been a holy site used by a religious hermit. The Kirk has been rebuilt or restored several times…continue reading →
