St. Monans – Series of Colourist Paintings

A Series of Colourist Paintings of St. Monans. Currently I'm enjoying working with bright colours in a Colourist style. I'm planning on doing a series of these paintings inspired by the village of St. Monans, and the East Neuk. Fishing villages have a lovely collection of 'folksy', old, higgledy-piggedy cottages, many painted in bright, cheerful colours. Old rowing-boats, flowerpots, barrels, all filled with flowering plants add to the overall colour. An absolute delight on warm, summer days! The Auld Kirk

I based this painting on an old painting I came across by John Guthrie Spence Smith, painted in 1930. I also went along and took several photos of the Kirk from the same angle. After a preliminary drawing, I then carried out the painting in acrylics. The Auld Kirk sits in St. Monans and the ancient site can be dated back to approx. 1265, although previous to this, it was believed that the site had been a holy site used by a religious hermit.
