Totoro Hat

I knitted this hat for my young granddaughter who loves Totoro, and ended up knitting a further 2 for her ‘friends’.
I’m not a knitter, but nevertheless, she was happy with the results 🙂 Hope you enjoy trying it!

Totoro Hat Knitting Pattern

Size: Hat made for 4yr old.

Yarn: Double-knit. Colour A, (A). Colour B, (B)
Needles: US size 8 (6mm)
Tapestry needle.

Note: When changing colours, drop the old colour and bring the new colour up from under the old colour, twisting them together to avoid gaps.

Make the Hat:

With A cast on 80 stitches. Work 8 rows in stocking stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row).

Work 4 rows in (knit 1, purl 1) ribbing.

Next row (right side): With first ball of A knit 30, drop A; join B, knit 20, drop B; join second ball of A, knit 30, turn work.
Row 2: Still working with second ball of A, purl 30, drop A; pick up B, purl 20, drop B; pick up first ball of A, purl 30, turn work.

Repeat these 2 rows seven times more.

Chest Pattern:

Start row 1 (right-side row) Follow pattern for next 16 rows using separate balls of yarn for each area.

Row 2: p31A, p18B, p31 A

Decrease Rows:

Row 1: (right side): With yarn A, (k8, k2 together) 8 times. (72 sts)
Row: 2: purl across
Row 3: (k7, k2 tog) 8 times. (64 sts)
Row 4: purl across
Row 5: (k6, k2 tog) 8 times. (56 sts)
Row 6: purl across
Row 7: (k5, k2 tog) 8 times. (48 sts)
Row 8: (p2 tog, p4) 8 times. (40 sts)
Row 9: (k3, k2 tog) 8 times. (32 sts)
Row 10: (p2 tog, p2) 8 times. (24 sts)
Row 11: (k2 tog, k1) 8 times. (16 sts)
Row 12: (p2 tog) to end of row. (8 sts)

Cut yarn leaving a tail. Thread tail through tapestry needle and slip needle through remaining 8 live stitches. Pull yarn tail gently to draw stitches together snugly, and fasten off. Sew back seam using mattress stitch. Weave in all loose ends to inside of hat.

Ears:

With A cast on 14 sts.

Work 4 rows in stocking stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row).

Row 5: k 1, k 2 tog, k to last 3 sts, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1
Row 6: p
Row 7: k 1, k 2 tog, k to last 3 sts, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1
Row 8: p
continue decreasing in this fashion until you have 4 sts on the needle
Row 15: cast off

Sew seam tog, sew to top of hat.

The pattern is a combination of my own efforts and 2 patterns I came across.
